Porcelain Crowns (CAPS)

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that we cannot restore with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although several crowns exist, metal-free porcelain (tooth-colored crown) is the most popular because it resembles your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but they may eventually need to be replaced like most dental restorations. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Reasons for Crowns:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings
  • The tooth has a root canal

What Does Getting a Crown Involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that we will use to create your custom crown. We will use a mold to create a temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until a dental laboratory fabricates your new crown.

While the tooth is numb, Dr. Chhabra will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to fit the crown properly. Once these details are accomplished, we will place your temporary crown with temporary cement, and we will check your bite to ensure you are biting properly. At your second appointment, we will remove your temporary crown and clean each tooth, and finally, we will carefully place your new crown to ensure accurate spacing and bite.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.

Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

As previously mentioned, patients can choose from multiple different types of dental crowns. At Almadensmiles, we recommend porcelain crowns, and here’s why:

  • Solid and Durable: If you maintain proper care on your crown, porcelain crowns can last for at least ten years. Porcelain is strong and can fight against the pressures on our teeth. Again it is up to you to take care of your crown to stay in good condition.
  • Protection: A crown’s original and primary purpose is to protect your natural tooth from experiencing any further damage. Crowns can help prevent natural wear and tear from occurring on the natural tooth, along with chips and breaks. It is also impossible for the crown itself to develop cavities.
  • Cosmetic Purposes: When crowns were first invented, their primary purpose was to restore and protect the natural tooth. Since dentistry has advanced, they are also used to help you have a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing smile.
  • Natural-Looking: It is common for patients to be self-conscious when needing any restorative work done. If you need a tooth restoration that will resemble your natural teeth, porcelain crowns are the best option. They match all other surrounding teeth’ size, shape, and color.
