What are Dentures?

Dentures are a set of artificial teeth that fit into the mouth to replace any gaps within the dental arches. When no natural teeth are left, complete dentures—a whole set of artificial teeth—are worn. Dentures available today look natural and are more comfortable than ever.

Complete Dentures in San Jose

Complete dentures can either be traditional or immediate:

Traditional Dentures

Conventional dentures, also known as traditional dentures, are created following dental extraction surgery and inserted in your mouth once your gums have healed. Your gums typically heal in 8 to 12 weeks. However, this might occasionally take longer. Because your mouth has time to recover fully, traditional dentures should fit quite comfortably and require fewer adjustments.

Immediate Dentures

When your teeth are extracted, immediate dentures are prepared and can be placed in your mouth immediately. The most significant disadvantage of immediate dentures is that they must be adjusted multiple times since they are inserted in your mouth before your gums have had a chance to recover. Using immediate dentures as a temporary fix while you wait for your gums to heal is also an option.

How are Full Dentures Placed?

You may be a candidate for dentures if you have multiple missing teeth on the top or bottom set. During your first consultation appointment at Almadensmiles, you will discuss your oral health goals with Dr. Daljit Chhabra. Then, Dr. Chhabra and her team will take an impression of your teeth. She will send the image to a laboratory where they will design the denture.

After the dentures are made in the lab, Dr. Chhabra will invite you back to the dental office to try on the dentures. She will make final adjustments to ensure the dentures fit correctly. Then, Dr. Chhabra will discuss the best ways to care for your dentures, which last for years.

How Should I Care for my Dentures?

Maintaining good oral health routines and caring for your dentures is essential to avoid damaging them. After you eat, remove your dentures and rinse them off. Rinsing will help remove debris and bacteria from the dentures that can collect while eating. When you remove your dentures, clean your gums with a soft toothbrush. Softly brushing will help remove debris, bacteria, and denture adhesive from your gums, cheeks, and tongue.

When you remove your dentures at night, brush them before placing them in a glass of water. Use a soft toothbrush made to clean dentures and a denture cleanser. It would help if you did not use toothpaste on your dentures because the abrasive toothpaste can scratch the dentures. When brushing the dentures, try to remove any denture paste on the dentures. After cleaning your dentures at night, soak them in a glass of water. If dentures become dry, for example, from sitting out overnight, they can crack and break.

When you wake up in the morning, remove your denture from the glass of water or denture cleanser. Remember to rinse off your dentures before placing them in your mouth.

How Often Should I Visit the Dentist after Getting Full or Immediate Dentures?

After Dr. Daljit Chhabra places your dentures, you should continue to visit the dentist for your regular dental appointments. It would be best to come to Almadensmiles every six months for a professional cleaning and exam. During this appointment, Dr. Chhabra will examine your dentures for potential concerns. Additionally, if your dentures feel loose or break between meetings, you should call the office for an appointment. Over time, the gums shrink, and dentures become loose. Dr. Chhabra can adjust the dentures to help them fit better and decrease the risk of slipping.
